Course Overview
This course will teach delegates to correctly prepare shipments of dangerous goods for transport by rail and road. Ideal for delegates new to dangerous goods transport, or looking to understand where the rail regulations differ from road. The course begins with a road module and goes on to cover wagon placarding, shunting, and COLIS Express, meeting the regulatory requirements for shippers detailed in the ADR (road) and RID (rail) regulations.

Frequently Asked Questions?
Do I need a certificate to ship dangerous goods?
Yes, legally you cannot ship dangerous goods by rail in the UK or overseas without sufficient training.
How is this course delivered?
The training course is delivered across five modules. The first four will focus on road and rail transport and the similarities, with the final day looking at specific rail transport processes and regulations such as COLIS and shunting.
How long does the certificate last?
There is no expiry date on our certificates for the transport of dangerous goods by rail and road. RID/ADR chapter 1.3 states retraining should take place ‘periodically’ without stating a specific timeframe. We suggest training should take place in line with changes to the regulations every two years.
Does the course cover me to ship dangerous goods by any other mode?
Whilst sea transport is very similar to road and rail, this course is purely focused on road and rail. If you need any other training you can view our full list of courses. Are there any pre-study requirements?
There are no pre-study requirements for this training course, however, we recommend discussing your objectives with your manager before attending the course. It is also helpful to share UN numbers and details of the types of dangerous goods movements with the trainer on the course so they can personalise the training as much as possible.
I only ship small quantities – is this course right for me?
This training course will enable you to ship any quantity of dangerous goods by rail allowed within the regulations. It will cover limited and excepted quantities (road and rail) as well as COLIS Express (rail only).
Will this course include bulk and tanker shipments by road and rail?
Our Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Rail & Road course includes transport of packaged dangerous goods as well as bulk, tanker and piggyback (lorry loaded onto rail wagon), movements by rail and road. The course will also cover shunting, marking and labelling and placarding.
