Organisations involved in sending, handling or carrying any dangerous goods have responsibilities under regulations – including ensuring that employees receive appropriate training for the functions they perform.

Dangerous goods awareness training for drivers

Drivers working within parcel and courier networks may regularly transport packages containing dangerous goods without a full ADR Driver Training Certificate. However, contrary to what many think that does not mean no dangerous goods training is required.

ADR Chapter 8.2.3 requires drivers who do not need an ADR Driver Training Certificate to receive training in accordance with Chapter 1.3. This includes general awareness and training appropriate to their responsibilities.

Our Dangerous Goods Awareness eLearning course provides an accessible introduction to dangerous goods and is particularly suitable for drivers and other employees who need an understanding of the hazards, rules and responsibilities associated with the goods they handle or transport.

ADR Limited Quantities driver training

One area of relevance to the parcel and distribution industry is the carriage of dangerous goods packed as Limited Quantities (LQ).

Limited Quantities provide relief from some of the requirements within the regulations and are widely used for consumer products transported through parcel networks. However, the LQ provisions do not simply remove the need for appropriate training.

ADR 2025 made the application of training requirements for drivers carrying Limited Quantities clearer. This clarification has also been highlighted by the British Association of Dangerous Goods Professionals (BADGP).

For parcel carriers, couriers and logistics operators, it is therefore important to consider whether drivers transporting Limited Quantities, from perfumes through to paints, have received suitable dangerous goods training.

Limited Quantities training for the parcel and logistics sector

We will also be promoting our dedicated Limited Quantities courses, which are particularly relevant to third-party logistics providers, carriers, distribution businesses and organisations regularly handling consumer products classified as dangerous goods.

We offer three options:

Limited Quantities by Road (eLearning) – for employees involved specifically in the road transport of dangerous goods packed in Limited Quantities.
Limited Quantities by Road & Sea (eLearning) – for organisations whose operations involve Limited Quantities moving through both road and maritime transport chains.
Limited Quantities by Air, Road & Sea (Live Online or Classroom) – for organisations or employees shipping dangerous goods in limited quantities by all three modes of transport.

The courses are designed to give employees practical, role-relevant knowledge of the requirements that apply when preparing, handling and transporting Limited Quantities.
