What is the difference between certification and revalidation dangerous goods by air training courses?

One of the questions we get asked most in the office is the difference between our revalidation and certification training courses and whether delegates can attend both under different circumstances.

The short answer to this question is that as a delegate you can attend whichever you prefer. Here are some of the key similarities and differences:

1. Content

The content for our revalidation and certification courses is the same. If you’re taking a Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Air certification course, we will be preparing you to the same standard as we would someone on the revalidation course.

2. Length

Here is where the most noticeable difference is. When you attend a revalidation course, we assume you’ll be familiar with a lot of the regulations since you’re already certified to transport dangerous goods. These courses are therefore shorter than our certification options. If you’re attending one of our Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Air certification training courses you’ll attend for three days, where as if you’re on a revalidation it will only be two days. Our online courses follow a similar pattern.

3. Speed

We know that some will prefer the slower pace of a certification course in order to complete their revalidation – and that is welcomed by our team. We actually sometimes encourage that for delegates, particularly those that haven’t had to engage with the regulations as much as others over the last two years. Perhaps your organisation has seen reduced volumes of dangerous goods being transported? Attending a certification course to revalidate might be a good idea so you can properly make sure you’re back up to speed.

4. Certificates

Whether you pass the exam on a certification or revalidation course, you’ll be at the same standard and receive the same certificate. The ICAO regulations governing the UK carriage of dangerous goods (and IATA manual) specify refresher training must take place every two years. Whichever course you attend and pass, you’ll receive the same certificate.

5. Approval

Both our certification and revalidation courses meet the standard required by the UK Civil Aviation Authority and we submit them for review by the UK competent authority every two years (alongside our other carriage of dangerous goods by air courses) to gain approval.
